Good questions Robby, women will open up but they do need to be encouraged. They worry that they will be seen as bragging.

That is so true thanks for sharing the story. It is exactly what women do, not that we need to be braggarts but we do need to learn to share our accomplishments.

It reminds me of a story that a Red Cross colleague told me not too long ago. It seems that during a disaster they needed a Red Cross volunteer to talk about what was being done by Red Cross in that area, so my colleague asked a rather free-spirited retiree to do the interview. As soon as the retiree got in front of the camera, she gave an extremely informative interview, hitting all the important points and really engaging the interviewer.

Afterwards my colleague, who was blown away, said "You did such an amazing job, what did you do before you retired?" The retiree had been the head of global HR for a Fortune top-50 company. She never would have said a word about it, if she hadn't been asked.

I often find out that women are far more accomplished than they are ready to imply by asking them questions which are extremely specific.

For example, consider asking: "How long have you been in this field?" or "How long have you owned this business?"

These questions allow you to praise the other person for their experience and success, and tend to work well with women in particular.

Thanks for the response. Yes I think the right mindset is a Givers attitude, but there must be the willingness to ask for referrals also.

I think that my referral mindset is "helpfulness". I am really interested in helping people solve problems, improve circumstances or make friends, so most of referral to and from others come out of that mind-set. My husband call it a "need to serve".
