<p>Following is a guest post from a friend of mine, Lorraine Ball, owner of <a href="http://www.roundpeg.biz" target="_blank">RoundPeg</a> she has been reading our book and doing some survey work of her own.  Very interesting early results!</p>
<p>Published in 1992,<a href="http://www.marsvenus.com/" target="_blank"> <em>Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus</em></a> has sold more than 7 million copies.   It has launched a firestorm of discussion about the differences between male and female communication patterns.</p>
<p>Over the years many other authors have tackled elements of these differences, including  Hazel Walker, Frank De Raffele and Ivan Misner, Ph.D.  Their new book, <a href="http://www.businessnetworkingandsex.com" target="_blank">Business Networking and Sex </a>explores how these gender differences affect us in the workplace.  As I read the book, I wondered, if we behaved differently on social media as well? So we added a few questions to our latest social media survey, and were surprised by how dramatic the differences are.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.roundpeg.biz" target="_blank">We</a> are early in the study, and this may change as more responses come in, but preliminary results indicate that women clearly prefer Facebook for business connections while men gravitate toward twitter.  Why?  These results seem to support the assertions of the authors, women like to build relationships, and that is easier on Facebook, while men seem to prefer the the more direct, short style of twitter.</p>
<p>Another surprise?  Almost as many women gravitate to the very formal LinkedIn environment.  Why?  I think it is rule. This is a clearly defined business environment.  There is no gray area where comments can be misconstrued as flirting rather then business.</p>

</a>Remember when you were a kid and you would catch someone in a lie, all the kids would run around and sing &#8220;liar liar, pants on fire, tear your britches on a telephone wire&#8221;.  I felt like tweeting that very thing to a tweeter this week.</span></p>
<p lang="en-US"><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">I was on twitter early in the morning this week when I came across a tweet that said the following:  &#8220;If you are thinking about or like tattoos here is a great resource link&#8221;.    I like well done tattoos, and I wanted to see this resource, so I clicked the link.<span id="more-952"></span></span></p>
<p lang="en-US"><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">Imagine my surprise to be taken to a splash page to buy a social media marketing kit!  I thought that I may have made a mistake so I closed the page and went back to the original  tweet and tried that link again.  No I had made no mistake at all, it took me right back to the splash page.</span></p>
<p lang="en-US"><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">I went back to the tweet again and reviewed this &#8220;Social Media Marketing&#8221; experts profile and it appears that it is common place for her to tweet this way.  More shocking she follows and is followed by 22,000 people and she has tweeted 10,000 times.  So I went to her website and I was not surprised to find it filled with buy, buy, buy propaganda.</span></p>
<p lang="en-US"><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">My next step was to report her tweet as spam, unfollow her and block her.  In my opinion I think that she is a liar and not someone I care to follow or to expose my followers to.  But here is the bigger question, does this this kind of bait and switch social media really work?  Is this the level of integrity that people can expect in the world of social media?</span></p>
<p lang="en-US"><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">If you expect me to buy from you, recommend you, or even continue to follow you then DON&#8217;T LIE TO ME!   Don&#8217;t leave me feeling deceived, tricked or taken advantage of.  Ok rant over, but I would love to hear from others of you.  What is your experience?</span></p>

It is the social aspects of our relationships that make for <a href="http://hazelmwalker.com/wp-admin/post.php?action=edit&amp;post=355" target="_self">strong business relationships</a> too.  It is those times when I get to know someone personally that makes me want to help them achieve their goals.  While we may not be fast friends we have developed a deeper relationship and it is that relationship that builds trust and a desire to help.  Building my network effectively is very important to me, adding the right people, <a href="http://hazelmwalker.com/wp-admin/post.php?action=edit&amp;post=355" target="_self">building relationships</a> with them requires that I stay in communication with them.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;" align="left">One of the things that I love about Twitter is my ability to have communication with local tweeters, to meet them face to face at tweet-ups in a casual manner.  Because we have spent so much time getting to know each other on twitter it is as if we have already met, we start the relationship much further along than if I had just met them. I already know what they are interested in by the tweets they post and the links the tweet.  I learn about their business when they tweet and list their blogs and I build credibility with my followers when I take the time to post good material on my blog, when I post good tweets.  I give to my network of tweeters by recommending them and retweeting their tweets.  When we finally do meet at a tweet-up we already know each other.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;" align="left">If you are tweeting take a little time to set up groups of local people who are tweeting. They are most likely people you are going to have the opportunity to meet and build networking relationships with.  For me, Tweetdeck has been a great tool for sorting my tweeters and creating groups that I can interact with, create relationships with and add to my network.</p>

<p>When I was a teen I would spend a lot of time with my grandparents.  My grandfather owned his own business, JR Custom Floors and I learned a lot from he and my grandmother as they ran that business.  Today as I was putting some dates and times on my calendar for some local &#8220;Tweetups&#8221;   I was brought back to a time when my grandparents did much the same thing with their coffee meets.</p>
<p>My grandfather belonged to a club, it was called the &#8220;Metro CBers&#8221;.   You know, those guys who had two way radios known as Citizen Band Radios and they talked to each other all the time.  There were many a night when my grandfather would be on the Radio until 1:00am in the morning talking to his friends.   They talked about everything on those radios and they all had &#8220;handles&#8221;  like &#8220;Floorshine&#8221;, &#8220;Qupiedoll&#8221;, &#8220;Bigbelly&#8221; and so forth.  Once a month they would meetup and have coffee, introduce each other, welcome the new CBers and handout their CB Cards with their handles on it.  It was a lot of fun and I always looked forward to going with my grandparents.  I did not know then that I was actually learning to network and those lessons would follow me into adulthood when I would start using a tool called &#8220;Twitter&#8221;</p>
<p>Oddly, the more things change, the more they stay the same!  Oh, and my grandmother reminds me, that I was &#8220;Qupiedoll&#8221;.  The handle that my grandfather gave me!</p>

</a>One of the most popular business tools in the Web 2.0 world is <a href="http://Linkedin.com">Linkedin</a>. If you are not on Linkedin yet, I would highly encourage you to get there, set up a profile and start connecting with your network. More and more business networking and connecting are happening using Linkedin, it is a tool that makes it easier to connect your network. Here are several ways that you can effectively use Linkedin to help you save time, support your network, pass referrals, and set yourself apart as an expert.</p>
<p><strong>1. <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/hazelmwalker">Set up your profile</a></strong> &#8211; Make it complete, many people go to profiles to learn more about you and your business, what your experience is, as well as where you went to school, and who you know.</p>
<p><strong>2. Put a professional photo on your profile</strong> &#8211; <a href="http://Linkedin.com" target="_blank">Linkedin</a> is not a &#8220;social&#8221; site, it is geared more for business and business people. Make sure that you are putting your best smile forward. If you do not have a professional photo get one!</p>
<p><strong>3. Ask for recommendations</strong> &#8211; If you have done work for one of your clients or network members ask them if they would consider writing a recommendation for you. Last week I spoke at the<a href="http://BNI-Indiana.com" target="_blank"> BNI National Conference,</a> several people asked me later what they could do for me. I asked each of them, if they had been in my presentation would they please go to my Linkedin Profile and write a recommendation. I asked them to list 2-3 things that they learned and why they would recommend me to others. In the <a href="http://referralinstitute.com">Referrals for Life Program</a> we teach our students how to write good testimonials for one another, a recommendation on Linkedin simply makes that testimonial public.</p>
<p><strong>4. <a href="http://thenetworkingstrategist.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?action=edit&amp;post=17" target="_blank">Invite your Network to Link</a></strong><a href="http://thenetworkingstrategist.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?action=edit&amp;post=17" target="_blank"> </a>- how many people do you have in your database? How many of them are already on Linkedin? Start connecting to them and invite the ones who are not on the site to join you. When you have your network on the site and you are linked to them it will make it so much easier to pass referrals and make connections between each other. You can make connections for one another on Linkedin. No more going through your CRM finding the information on a contact then emailing it. You can simply make connections on the Linkedin site.</p>
<p><strong>5. Answer Questions</strong> &#8211; find questions that you can answer that will help you be seen as an expert. Because of a question that I answered on Linkedin, I was ask to speak on a conference call to a group of Female CEO&#8217;s. Find the questions on topics that you are expert in and answer them well. You can also use these same questions in your blog and newsletters.</p>
<p>Last week, one person in my network, connected me to someone in his network who had ask him if he would make the connection. After some conversation he ask me if I would consider speaking at the regional conference for his organization. I then connected him to someone that he saw in my network whom he thought would be good for a future speaking engagement.</p>
<p>Of all the sites that I am on, Linkedin is the one that makes it easy to connect my networks and help them to connect to one another, it is a perfect tool when you are in the<a href="http://referralinstitute.com"> Referrals for Life Program</a>. Remember Linkedin is a tool that enhances, not replace your face to face networking.</p>

<p>All things being equal people want to do business with people they know, like and trust.  That includes Not For Profit Organizations.</p>
<p>I am speaking a the <a href="http://afpindiana.afpnet.org/">AFP or Association of Fundraising Professionals </a>on Friday.  I am the opening act in a line up of<a href="http://innovativefundraising.wordpress.com/speakers/"> highly professional speakers</a> on the topic of Social Networking, or Web 2.0.</p>
<p>I will be speaking about how Online Networking enhances your Face to Face networking and builds stronger networking relationships.   But, I am a little perplexed, I am not sure that many Fundraising or Not for Profits really do face to face networking.  I have met very few of them at a BNI meeting or at a <a href="http://www.gorainmakers.com/rainmakers/">Rainmakers </a>meeting.  Thinking of the chamber events I go to, I meet few if any of them there.  So, I ask myself why don&#8217;t I ever meet them?  Where are they networking?  Do they network? Are they meeting the Small Business Owers, or are they just looking for the big guys?</p>
<p><a href="http://www.gleaners.org/" target="_blank">Gleaners Food Bank</a> is an example of a Not for Profit that networks face to face and does it well.  They are active in <a href="http://BNI.com">BNI</a> and have even taken leadership positions in their chapter and in the region.  Because of their participation, many BNI members have taken tours, <a href="http://bni-indiana.com">BNI Indiana</a> does an annual fundraiser for them.  We learned that Gleaners does not just feed the hungry,  they help pantries around the state feed the hungry.  Not just the hungry but children who get backpacks of food and senior citizens who get food delivered to them.</p>
<p>They have gotten volunteers, like Stacie Shipley with JNS Electric who delivers senior boxes for them every week.  They have create positive word of mouth when the had <a href="http://www.gleaners.org/" target="_self">Aaron Prickle of Lushin Associates</a> take a tour so he could understand what they really do, and he now clears up a lot of misconceptions that he and many of his associates were once under.  Victoria has educated a lot of BNI members about the organization all because she believes in face to face networking.  Unfortunately they have embraced less of the Social Networking.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.indyhumane.org/" target="_blank">Indianapolis Human Society</a> has done a good job with social networking, I see them on Smaller Indiana and on Twitter, but I have never met anyone from the humane society at networking meeting.</p>
<p>If you are a NFP or a Fundraising Professional it is important to understand that people want to volunteer and donate to people they KNOW, LIKE and TRUST.  Getting out to business networking events are important activities, it allows people to get to know you and your mission, to build a relationship, to volunteer, to spread word of mouth and to be advocates.</p>
<p>Using Social Media to amplify those relationships is the icing on the cake.  It is a new economy and everyone is holding on to their dollars, it is time for Fundraisers to come out of the offices and board rooms and meet the small business people in the community.  After all small business owners want to help, they are the fastest growing sector of the economy, but they also want to know who they are helping and why.  They want to meet you face to face.</p>

<p>Here are some tips for those of you who want to use Twitter in your networking strategy.  These are a few things that you should know, beyond that have fun.</p>
<p><strong>Important Things to Remember When Using Twitter</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Be Authentic- Be you</li>
<li>Read Others Profiles and Tweets</li>
<li>Find Local People to Follow &#8211; Use Search for your town or city</li>
<li>Follow those who follow you &#8211; after you read their profile</li>
<li>Send a Personal Direct Message (DM)  to those who follow you</li>
<li>Do more than post your Blog or your website to the tweet stream</li>
<li>Retweet Others- Retweeting is key, when you read a good tweet, RT</li>
<li>Try to keep your follow/followers about even</li>
<li>Read and Comment on others Tweets/Blogs</li>
<li>Recommend others to follow</li>
<li>Keep it positive</li>
<li>Engage and again be Authentic</li>
<li>Go to some Local Tweetups &amp; meet the people you have been tweeting with.</li>
<li>Follow your Network Members, you are able to communicate more frequently with them.</li>
<li>Lean more by following links that your followers will often provide.</li>
</ul>
<p>Most of all, have fun, don&#8217;t become addicted, but be consistent in your tweets. You will find that you are starting to build relationships with some of the people you do not know and enriching those that you do.</p>
