Are You Surrounding Yourself With the Best

Posted on by on August 7th, 2010 | 10 Comments »

You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
Jim Rohn

If we are going to be the best that we can be in this life, then it is important that you surround yourself with others who are striving to be the best that they can be. When you are developing referral partners this is also very important. The relationship between referral partners becomes very close, when the relationship is working well you are meeting and developing referral strategies, sending your best customers and building strong relationships with this person. After all you are helping each other to succeed.

  • Do they have a positive and supportive attitude.
  • Do they have a giving attitude
  • Are they open to learning and growing
  • Do they support you and your vision

Surround yourself with people who are going where you want to go. When you have people on the path with you it makes the journey so much easier..

    Hi Hazel,
Oh so true and yes I do in all my networks.

I recently heard that if you add up the incomes of your top 5 contacts then divide by 5, your personal income is within $ 2,000 of the average.

I guess I should come and hang out with you more your majesty

all the best and see you soon

Phil thanks for the comment. I am always trying to surround myself the the best and the brightest and I count you as one of those. Frankly I should be coming to Dubi and learning from you!

    I couldn’t agree more, Hazel!

I go to a lot of marketing events to brush up on my skills, while meeting more people like me…and the more I attend, the more I realize how important your point really is.

We’re not normal. We want and crave more success! Being with people like us is a MUST. The other people in this world, who aren’t “weird”, are content with where they are…I don’t like that feeling.

Let me give you a real example: I was just in Vegas at a seminar for speakers. While there I witnessed the “normal” people playing slots and gambling their money away.

Not people like us…we were there INVESTING our money. Big difference!

Now, I’m not saying it’s bad to gamble if you like it (I don’t). However the people gambling while we were learning and growing aren’t “My kinda people”.

My people (and I’m sure yours) are and were the ones who invested several thousand to be there to better themselves…and help each other.

Again, we’re not the “normal” ones. We have to stick together…it’s soooo important!

  4. Hi Hazel

Great blog, I very much agree.

I was at the BNI European directors conference earlier this year and impressed by one of the presenters comments:

“Is the juice worth the squeeze?”

This is something I apply to my business relationships now and have seen increased profit as a result.

Surrounding yourself with the best is so important in everything you do. The last two weeks I have been on active duty with the MN National Guard and have had the opportunity to see how our battalion planning process has worked compared to the other battalions from our brigade that are here with us. I have found that I am surrounded by other officers that are truly the best at what they do and feel very fortunate that this was the unit I was assigned to. I know that by working with them over the last two years and during the next few years I will be more successful in my military career than I would be had I ended up somewhere else. The people you surround yourself with, whether on purpose or by chance, do have a huge impact on your success. Thanks Hazel for reminding us all of this key to success.

  6. Bonjour Hazel,

    Thank you for sharing this.

In business, hanging out with people we like is just not enough. They really need to match some simple criterias in order to become real referral partners.

Spending some time tracking our networking activities allow us to see when somebody is just a good friend, and not a referral Partner.

When we are not surrounded with the best, it doesn’t only affect our partner’s businesses or ours, it also has a huge impact on our lives.

Thnik about it: did you ever play tennis or golf with a better player than yourself?
Did you get a real opportunity to enhance some of your knowledges, put into practice better habits?

This is why for example having a mentor –someone who actually is where you want to be- is so powerful.

I can’t agree more with you about this article you’ve posted.

What are the answers to the following questions when we do not consistently focus on being surrounded with the best:

    - Do we receive qualified referrals?
    - Can we easily pass on referrals to our partners?
    - What is our conversion rate on referrals (if any??)?
    - Are we introduced to the people we want to talk to?
    - Are these persons good referrals for our partners?
    - Did we improve a lot since the beginning of the year?

Hazel, I’ve got a feeling that you are one of the best.

Thanks for an excellent comment, and showing us that in all areas of our lives. When those we surround ourselves with are great, they pull us up and allow us to become great too. Thanks for your service Kevin.

Weston I guess I would consider us all normal, just different variations. If I were a Gambler I would want to hang out with all of the best Gamblers. I know a guy who makes his entire living on Poker, by surrounding ourselves with the very best we learn more and become better ourselves. I also like to be able to elevate others so always look for those opportunities too. Thanks for your Comment.

Well Said Thierry, I agree we must really take a look at who is the influences in our lives and businesses. These are often good referral partners too.
